FOS is commonly referred to as a "prebiotic" because it acts as a fertilizer for the bacteria in our colon. Certain lactobacillus bacteria have been found to preferentially ferment FOS, which is why it is often recommended as a supplement to nourish the beneficial bacteria in our gut.
